On the 1st December 2010 the new EU Globally Harmonised System (GHS) Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) regulations come into effect. This means that some products that were not previously classed as hazardous now need warning labels applied.
Codeology were recently approached by a manufacturer of bulk products that are affected by these regulations to assist them in labelling their 25kg bags and shrink-wrapped pallets.
Taking the Codeology P140 label applicator (shown here) as a base, Codeology modified the design to take into account the specific needs of the customers environment. The labellers needed to be robust and reliable in extremely dusty conditions. They needed to be simple to use and above all be able to cope with the exception of a damaged, ripped or badly presented bag colliding with the labeller. Standard industrial labelling systems will rarely cope when hit by an incorrectly presented 25kg bag and the label applicator could be badly damaged.
As all Codeology labellers use Igus plastic bearings we were off to a good start in terms of reliability in a dusty environment. The all stainless steel and aluminium construction also helped, as did the simple operation. All Codeology labellers can handle Jumbo label rolls of up to 6000 labels thus ensuring maximum uptime between label changeovers. To ensure that the labeller could cope with the exceptional bags, a special breakaway peeler bar was constructed. This allowed the parts of the labeller that were in close proximity to the bags to spring out of the way in the event of a collision, and return to their normal operating position when the bag had passed.
Finally special stands were constructed from robust stainless steel box section to enable the label applicators to be supported over the top of the existing bag conveyors and alongside the pallet conveyor.
Although two of the applicators were for small product labels and one was for an A5 pallet label, all of the machines were designed to use common components, meaning that one set of spares could cover all machines.
Using our years of experience Codeology were able to supply a complete solution of label applicators, A5 pallet labels and smaller product labels all pre-printed with the appropriate coloured hazard symbols.
